  4. This is the README.TXT file for version 2.10 of NewsWerthy.
  5.  
  6. NewsWerthy is a DOS based offline mail reader for the SOUP format.
  7. It is copyrighted and it is shareware. There is a registration fee
  8. of $25 for use of NewsWerthy after the 30 day evaluation period.
  9. See the file NWERTHY.RDR for details. You are encouraged to make
  10. copies and distribute NewsWerthy, as long all files (as listed)
  11. are included in the archive. See the file LICENSE.TXT for details.

  37. 6/9/96 (version 2.10)
  38. * Fixes bug where sometimes a group can't be marked unread.
  39. * Added a "saved" directory. By default, text files and file
  40.   attachments will be saved here. The editor will also default
  41.   to using this directory.
  42. * Deletes of a large number of messages is now as fast as 
  43.   deleting one message. The more messages you delete, the faster
  44.   it will be (sounds backwards, but true).
  45. * Added improvements to the file attachment saving. If no file
  46.   attachment is found, mark the first line of the encoded text, to
  47.   force it to find a non-standard file attachment.
  48. * Added marking the current subject read or marked.
  49. * Added marking of messages for use with saving, printing and
  50.   deleting of messages.
  51. * Added option to move (save, then delete) message.
  52. * Can now mark all messages read by pressing * from the last
  53.   message in a newsgroup.
  54. * Bookmarking of messages has been extensively revised
  55.   (internally). This was done to add the following: An R in the
  56.   messages list, and REPLIED in the message marks a message that
  57.   has been replied to. Also S for a saved message and Saved in the
  58.   message. Also if only viewing unread messages (space bar
  59.   pressed), deleting a message will not remove the read messages
  60.   from the message list.
  61. * Picklists are now displayed in a larger list.
  62. * Added "increment packet name" option in the message options in
  63.   the setup menu. Save up to 9 previous packets.
  64. * Added option to not display in the newsgroup list, newsgroups
  65.   with zero unread messages. See the "Hide Read Newsgroups" in the
  66.   message options in the setup menu. Pressing Alt-H will also
  67.   alternate between hiding and showing the newsgroups with zero
  68.   unread messages.
  69. * Fixed bug which caused lock-up when deleting last message in a
  70.   group.
  71. * Added option to not split email into separate "newsgroups".
  72. * Added option to use external text file viewer to view message.
  73.   Press Alt-V from the messages list, to start viewer entered in
  74.   setup.
  75. * Added command switch (/p packetname) to pre-process (create
  76.   indexes) the packet (Registered users only).
  77. * Changed multiple setups feature so that it now requires
  78.   "/s setup" (without quotes) on command line instead of just
  79.   the filename.
  80. * Long lines are now wrapped when quoting the message for a reply.
  81. * The message list is immediatly updated (killed messages removed)
  82.   when a message is added to a kill list.
  83. * Fixed bug where the extra headers picklist in the menu, was not
  84.   linked to the one in the replies dialog.
  85. * The "Max. Messages in Newsgroup" in Databasing Options dialog is
  86.   now the limit after importing the new packet, not before, as it
  87.   was previously. 
  88. * A few other minor improvements.

  90. TO INSTALL:
  91.  
  92. * Make sure pkzip and pkunzip are on your path:
  93.  
  94.   To verify that they are, enter pkzip at a DOS prompt. If you
  95.   receive the message "Bad command or file name", then you'll
  96.   need to locate pkzip and note the directory. Edit the file
  97.   C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT, and add a semicolon (;) and the directory to
  98.   the end of the line that starts with PATH=. Of course if you
  99.   don't have a copy of pkzip, you'll have to get one. This can
  100.   most likely be found at the same location you found NewsWerthy.
  101.  
  102. * Run the install batch file from where you have unzipped the 
  103.   NWRTH210.ZIP like so:
  104.  
  105.   install C:
  106.  
  107.   Where C: is your hard drive.
  108.  
  109.   The above will install NewsWerthy in the C:\NWERTHY directory
  110.   and run NewsWerthy. A welcome packet will be opened that
  111.   contains a mini-tutorial. After viewing the tutorial (which is
  112.   really a SOUP packet), you'll want to finish entering your setup
  113.   data. Follow the directions in the tutorial to finish setting up
  114.   NewsWerthy. You can view the welcome packet again by pressing
  115.   F4 (Read News). Or you can view it later by placing it in your
  116.   download directory, press F3 (New Packet) and select it to open
  117.   it.

  119. * Or if you prefer to install NewsWerthy manually, first make a
  120.   directory named NWERTHY, then copy NWERTHY.* to it. You'll also
  121.   need a subdirectory named FOLDERS (for saved messages) and a
  122.   SAVED subdirectory for saved text files and file attachments.
  123.   Make sure you have set the TEMP or TMP environment variable
  124.   (enter set, at a DOS prompt to check). If not add a 
  125.   "SET TEMP=C:\TEMP" line to your autoexec.bat file and create the
  126.   TEMP directory. You'll need at least 500k free for the TEMP
  127.   directory.
  128.  
  129. FOR UPGRADES:
  130.  
  131. You can only use the install batch file to upgrade if you've
  132. installed NewsWerthy in the \NWERTHY directory. Otherwise use the
  133. manual install procedure above.
  134.  
  135. * For those who are upgrading from a version prior to 1.60:
  136.  
  137.   Turn on the Word wrap feature in the Message Options dialog
  138.   under the Setup menu. The NWERTHY.BKM file is no longer used,
  139.   and may be deleted from the work directory. Ignore the error
  140.   message about not being able to remove 0000000.BKM file, the
  141.   first time NewsWerthy is run.
  142.  
  143. * For those who are upgrading from a version prior to 1.70:
  144.  
  145.   Make sure that your email address is entered in the Reply-To
  146.   picklist and add any mailing lists to the address book. This is
  147.   used in separating out your personal mail from mailing lists.
  148.  
  149. * For those who are upgrading from a version prior to 2.00:
  150.  
  151.   Turn off the "Expire All Messages" option, if you want to use
  152.   NewsWerthy as a "Databasing" reader. Read the manual about how
  153.   to use the Databasing Options. Additional information about the
  154.   Databasing Options can be found in the section on "Reading the
  155.   Database with the Number Keypad".
  156.  
  157. * For all upgrades:
  158.  
  159.   If you use the multiple setups feature, change your command to
  160.   use "nwerthy /s setup" (without quotes) on command line, instead
  161.   of just the filename.
  162.  
  163.   If you want NewsWerthy to continue to separate mailing lists
  164.   into their own "newsgroups", set this option in the message
  165.   options in the setup menu (under miscellaneous).
  166.  
  167.   If for some reason after running 2.10 you decide to return to
  168.   a previous version, you need to delete all .BKM files from the
  169.   working directory (the format for 2.10 is not compatible with 
  170.   previous versions).
  171.  
  172. * For those who were using Yarn:
  173.  
  174.   First install NewsWerthy per the above instructions.
  175.   To convert Yarn's address book, to NewsWerthy's address book.
  176.   Run YARNTONW.EXE from the \NWERTHY directory like so: 
  177.     YARNTONW ADDRBOOK
  178.   This will create a file named NWERTHY.PL9 in the work directory
  179.   you've got listed in the Setup menu. To convert your folders,
  180.   run the SENDFOLD utility included with YUTIL02.ZIP in the
  181.   dos/offline directory on SimTel. Then open the SOUP packet this
  182.   creates in NewsWerthy, and save the messages to the correct
  183.   folders.

  185. GETTING STARTED:
  186.  
  187. As a minimum, you'll want to read the Quick Start Procedure
  188. (section II) in the manual (NWERTHY.DOC) and consult the online
  189. help often. If you haven't used UQWK with the SOUP format before,
  190. or want to learn how to use NewsWerthy better, read section III
  191. of the manual.
